Look Back at the 11th Shinchitose Airport International Animation Festival
The 11th Shinchitose Airport International Animation Festival was held from November 1 to 5, 2024. On November 4, we had a special talk titled “Making of: Look Back” featuring director Kiyotaka Oshiyama, discussing the background of the film that won the Jury Special Award in the long feature category. The film “Look Back” has been a massive hit, grossing over 2 billion yen and is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Insights from the Director
During the talk, Oshiyama shared insights into adapting Fujimoto Tatsuki’s original work into animation. He emphasized the importance of respecting the original artwork while making adjustments for animation. The film’s unique visual style, including the use of reflections and light, was a significant focus during production.
Animation Techniques and Challenges
Oshiyama discussed the challenges of translating the dense and detailed artwork of the original manga into animation, particularly in character design and maintaining the essence of the original story. He also highlighted the importance of sound and natural performances in the film, which contributed to its overall success.
Conclusion
The Shinchitose Airport International Animation Festival continues to be a vital platform for showcasing animation and fostering cultural exchange. We look forward to more exciting events and projects in the future!
