MF Ghost Season 2 Episode 10 Review: The Peninsula Begins!

Welcome to the thrilling world of “MF Ghost,” where high-speed racing meets captivating storytelling! In this review, we delve into the latest episode of the second season, which has left fans buzzing with excitement. Join me as we explore the exhilarating moments, character developments, and the intense racing action that defines this beloved anime series.

Episode Overview

The highly anticipated TV anime “MF Ghost” has been making waves since its premiere in the fall of 2023. The second season is currently airing, and I’m excited to share my thoughts on the latest episode, which is the 10th of the season, titled “The Peninsula Opens” (Episode 22 overall).

Warning: This article contains significant plot details about “MF Ghost”. If you wish to avoid spoilers, I strongly recommend watching the episode first.

The third race of MFG, “The Peninsula Manazuru,” has finally begun! After securing 4th place in the previous race, “Lake Ashi GT,” Kanata is in great form, currently sitting 5th in the overall standings. The qualifying time trial took place on the third day of the event.

The most notable aspect of this qualifying round is the performance of Kanata’s beloved Hachi-Roku, which has been turbocharged, significantly increasing its horsepower. Kanata seems to be feeling quite confident, stating, “This is the Eight-Six I’ve always wanted,” and even suggesting that “Mr. Okuyama might truly be a magician.” His declaration the day before the race, “I feel great about the Eight-Six Turbo,” only heightens the anticipation!

As someone who doesn’t drive at all, I find it hard to grasp the difference between 200 horsepower and 300 horsepower. However, Kanata’s comment, “Even uphill, the third gear accelerates like the second gear used to,” was very relatable and made it easy to understand the situation. This kind of subtle dialogue showcases the brilliance of the original author, Shuichi Shigeno.

Hachi-Roku Turbo’s Debut

The debut race for the Hachi-Roku Turbo took place in the B-part of the episode. Previously, the Hachi-Roku had been slicing through technical sections and downhill slopes, but this time it showcased impressive power on the straights as well.

Typically, as speed increases, controlling the car becomes more challenging, but Kanata defies this norm. He skillfully utilizes the narrow road to maintain his speed, reminiscent of the legendary Takumi Fujiwara. The sight of the Hachi-Roku drifting through corners was incredibly cool, evoking memories of the iconic panda-trimmed Trueno.

Beckenbauer’s reaction to Kanata’s performance was also noteworthy. While he had acknowledged Kanata’s skills, he had previously downplayed the machine’s power. However, this time, he could no longer ignore Kanata’s prowess, which was portrayed in a refreshingly realistic manner.

Interestingly, Beckenbauer didn’t outright admit Kanata’s strength. His unique phrasing, “Just one more noisy bug buzzing around my face, like Sawatari. If it annoys me, I’ll swat it down,” made me chuckle. His pride is quite high!

Record-Breaking Performance

With many spectators watching, Kanata and the Hachi-Roku Turbo finished the qualifying round by breaking the course record at “The Peninsula Manazuru.” While their performance was truly outstanding, it undoubtedly ignited the competitive spirit among the top racers. I can’t wait to see how the other rivals will respond!

Romantic Developments

While the time trial was thrilling, the romantic subplot involving Kanata and the heroine, Ren, was equally intense. One memorable line from this episode came from Kyoko, who exclaimed, “Could it be that person? The super rookie of MFG!?” during a dinner with Ren, who was seeking love advice.

When Ren finally revealed her crush, she hesitated to say the name directly, opting for a quiz format instead. Knowing the answer, I couldn’t help but smile at her shyness. Kyoko’s surprised reaction and Ren’s bashful acknowledgment of her feelings were delightful.

Ren’s innocence and purity in her first love are refreshing, and it’s understandable that she feels a bit flustered. However, Kyoko’s strong declaration of support suggests that there may be some progress in Ren’s romantic journey soon.

Kanata is quite the catch, having received a handwritten address from Mami, known for her “hamiketsu,” and a protective charm from his fellow driver, Nozomi Kitahara. Ren certainly has her work cut out for her!

Looking Ahead

As the second season approaches its climax, both romance and racing seem poised for more twists and turns. With the next episode titled “The Price of Courage,” there’s an air of tension that can’t be ignored. I’m already on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting what’s next!
