Celebrating 50 Years of Space Battleship Yamato
The iconic anime “Space Battleship Yamato” is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special selection screening across 42 theaters nationwide starting December 27 for three weeks. This event, supervised by Hideaki Anno, has unveiled a trailer and three poster visuals, along with exclusive entry gifts.

This screening project is part of the larger 50th-anniversary initiative, which includes exhibitions, publications, and various events. Anno has curated three programs, each featuring three selected episodes from the original 1974 television series, which consists of 26 episodes in total. Each program will be screened for one week at venues like Shinjuku Piccadilly.
Trailer and Visuals
The trailer, crafted under Anno’s supervision, showcases intense battles between the Yamato and the Gamilas Empire, highlighting the crew’s action-packed moments set to the series’ theme music. The visuals have been refined by Anno to symbolize the story of each program:
- Program 1:Features Susumu Kodai with a Cosmo Gun in front of the Yamato.
- Program 2:Depicts Mori Yuki and Analyzer, with the ominous presence of the Bimera aliens in the background.
- Program 3:Shows Starsha watching over the Yamato as it returns to Earth.
Screening Schedule
The screening will be divided into three programs, each lasting 75 minutes:
- Program 1 (December 27 – January 2):Episodes 2, 3, and 7
- Program 2 (January 3 – 9):Episodes 16, 18, and 22
- Program 3 (January 10 – 16):Episodes 23, 24, and 26
As a special bonus, attendees will receive a mini-poster featuring the program visuals, distributed weekly. This event not only commemorates a beloved classic but also showcases the ongoing legacy of the Yamato series, with new theatrical anime projects in the works under Anno’s leadership.
